Granite, quartz, and marble countertops add elegance and value to any kitchen or bathroom. Keeping them clean and properly sealed protects their beauty and durability. Each material requires specific care to avoid damage and maintain its natural shine. This guide explains how to clean these surfaces effectively and how often to seal them for long-lasting results.

How to Clean Granite Countertops

Granite is a durable natural stone but can stain or dull if not cared for correctly. Use a mild dish soap mixed with warm water and a soft cloth or sponge for daily cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals, acidic cleaners like vinegar or lemon juice, and abrasive scrubbers that can wear down the surface.

For tougher spots, use a granite-specific cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water applied gently. Always rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

How to Clean Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are engineered stone, making them non-porous and resistant to stains. Use warm water and a mild detergent for routine cleaning. A soft cloth or sponge works best to avoid scratching the surface.

Avoid bleach, high-pH cleaners, and abrasive pads. For sticky or stubborn stains, a plastic putty knife can help gently scrape residue without damaging the quartz. Rinse and dry the surface after cleaning to keep it looking polished.

How to Clean Marble Countertops

Marble is softer and more porous than granite or quartz, so it requires extra care. Clean marble with a pH-neutral cleaner or a mild dish soap diluted in water. Use a soft cloth and avoid acidic or abrasive products that can etch or dull the surface.

Blot spills immediately, especially acidic substances like wine, coffee, or citrus juice, to prevent staining. For stains, a poultice made from baking soda and water can draw out impurities when applied carefully.

How Often to Seal Each Countertop Type

Sealing protects natural stone from stains and moisture. Quartz does not require sealing because it is non-porous.

  • Granite: Seal every 1 to 3 years, depending on usage and the stone’s porosity. Test by placing a few drops of water on the surface; if it absorbs quickly, it’s time to reseal.

  • Marble: Seal every 6 to 12 months since marble is more porous and prone to staining. Regular sealing helps maintain its appearance and prevents damage.

Use a high-quality penetrating sealer designed for natural stone. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully for the best results.
